Donetsk, Aug 8 – DAN. Donetsk People’s Republic Head Denis Pushilin expressed condolences to the relatives of residents of South Ossetia’s capital Tskhinval and city defenders killed in a Georgian army strike overnight to August 8, 2008.

“Recalling the tragic events of August 2008, the Donetsk People’s Republic grieves together with South Ossetia,” Pushilin said on the anniversary of Tskhinval shelling. “We share the pain of loss with each grieving family.”

He said that Mikhail Saakashvili who was Georgian president in 2004-2013 and the country’s government were responsible for the death of Tskhinval residents and defenders.

August 8 marks the 11th anniversary of the Georgian troops attack on Tskhinval. The Russian Federation rallied to the defence of South Ossetia’s residents; many of them had already been granted Russian citizenship by then. More than 1,000 people were killed in the ensuing five-day conflict, including 72 Russian military. On August 26, 2008, Russia recognised the independence of South Ossetia, as well as the independence of Abkhazia, another Georgian autonomy.*jk*pp
